Hemp Shops Are Not the Answer

Life Medical Monthly Newsletter

With hemp and CBD shops proliferating across Minnesota and the country, many patients are turning to over-the-counter hemp products for relief from pain, anxiety, sleep problems, and other conditions. While some of these products have value, there are important limitations and risks that patients should understand.

The Problem with Unregulated Products

Hemp-derived CBD products sold in retail shops are not regulated by the FDA in the same way that medications are. Studies have found that many products contain significantly more or less CBD than their labels claim, and some have been found to contain contaminants including heavy metals, pesticides, and even undisclosed THC.

Dosing Is Guesswork Without Medical Guidance

Effective CBD dosing varies enormously between individuals and conditions. Without medical guidance, most people are essentially guessing — and often using doses that are too low to be therapeutic. A knowledgeable provider can help you identify the right product, dose, and delivery method for your specific situation.

Drug Interactions Are Real

CBD is metabolized by the same liver enzymes as many common medications, including blood thinners, antiepileptics, and certain antidepressants. This can lead to significant drug interactions that are not well understood by retail shop staff. Medical supervision is important if you are taking other medications.

Medical Cannabis Is a Better Option for Many Patients

For patients with qualifying conditions, Minnesota's medical cannabis program provides access to rigorously tested, accurately labeled products at consistent doses. Medical cannabis patients also benefit from provider guidance, follow-up care, and access to a broader range of formulations than what is available over the counter.

We are not saying hemp products have no value — some do. But for serious health conditions, medical supervision makes a significant difference in outcomes. We are here to help you navigate your options.
