Cannabis Confusion
Life Medical Monthly Newsletter
The rapid expansion of cannabis legalization across the United States has created a confusing landscape for patients and consumers alike. Medical cannabis, recreational cannabis, hemp-derived CBD, delta-8 THC — the terminology alone is enough to overwhelm most people. This month, we cut through the noise.
Medical vs. Recreational vs. Hemp: What's the Difference?
Medical cannabis is prescribed for specific health conditions and is subject to rigorous testing and quality controls. Recreational cannabis is legal for adult use in many states but is not tailored to therapeutic goals. Hemp-derived products (including most CBD sold in stores) come from cannabis plants with very low THC content and are largely unregulated at the federal level.
The Delta-8 Problem
Delta-8 THC has flooded the market as a legal loophole product — it is synthesized from hemp-derived CBD and sold in gas stations and convenience stores. It produces psychoactive effects similar to delta-9 THC but is largely unregulated, untested for safety, and has been associated with adverse events including hospitalizations. We strongly advise patients to avoid these products.
Why Product Quality Matters
Not all cannabis products are created equal. Contaminants, inaccurate labeling, and inconsistent potency are common in the unregulated market. Minnesota's medical cannabis program requires rigorous third-party testing, accurate labeling, and consistent formulations — which is why we recommend it over retail alternatives for patients with health conditions.
How to Make Sense of It All
The simplest rule: if you are using cannabis for a health condition, work with a knowledgeable medical provider. Self-medicating with unregulated products is a gamble. A provider who understands cannabis medicine can help you identify the right product, dose, and delivery method — and monitor your response over time.
Cannabis medicine is a legitimate and valuable tool when used appropriately. We are here to help you navigate it safely and effectively.
